I absolutely HATE it when I watch the news and see so many people suffering during a natural disaster like the recent Nepal earthquake. As of the time that this article was written, the death toll was estimated to be around 4,000 with some expecting it to climb to 5,000!
It’s completely understandable that fear and panic is widespread throughout the region. This panic is only intensified by the shortage of the basic necessities of life such as food, water, and medical supplies.
Fortunately, many countries are stepping up and providing aid to those who were displaced or affected by this terrible tragedy but nothing can erase the suffering that has already taken place.
Those of us in the prepping community often see a surge in the interest of emergency preparedness anytime a natural disaster like this takes place anywhere in the world, and for good reason! Times like these make the need to become prepared for emergencies seem so much more important and real.
Tragedy Can Strike Anywhere!
Today, it’s the citizens of Nepal who are suffering but there’s nothing to say that tomorrow it couldn’t be my community who is going though a very similar crisis. Just last year nearly 30 homes burned to the ground in a little neighboring community of ours! This pales in comparison to an earthquake that has taken the lives of thousands but it just goes to further prove that none of us can really afford to be unprepared.
Each and every prepper has their own personal motivating forces that drives them to prep. Regardless of your personal reasons, one thing that NONE of us can escape is the possibility of being displaced by a major natural disaster. If you think you’re safe because you live in the middle of nowhere in a remote town, you’re wrong! Mother Nature is indiscriminating when she chooses where the next major disaster will strike.
I’m sure that no one woke up in Nepal this week and said, “we’d better stock up on food and water because there’s an earthquake coming soon”.
Don’t Neglect Your Bug Out Preparations
Most of us store food, water, and other essential survival items but what if a major earthquake were to take your home out tomorrow? Do you have a well thought out bug out plan? Do you have supplies stashed in survival caches that you can make your way to so that you can have access to the essential staples of survival during a situation like this?
If a tragedy such as the Nepal earthquake were to strike your home, many of your supplies could be destroyed. Even if they survived the disaster, local governing officials could issue mandatory evacuations. If all your eggs are in one basket, meaning that all your supplies are stored at your home, what good will they do you if you have to leave your home during an evacuation?
Let Your Fear Motivate You to Take Action
If you don’t have a “healthy” fear of a major natural disaster striking where you live, you should. The important thing is that you use that fear as motivation. If you haven’t started prepping or you’ve lost your drive to prep on a regular basis, I challenge you to spend five minutes watching the news. Take a close look at the faces of the people who are suffering so badly right now in Nepal and then take action!
Take a really close look at your prepping plans and find the holes that need to be patched. If you have neglected to prepare for a bug out scenario because you “hope” to be able to survive at home, you really need to change your mindset and start planning and preparing for a day that may come when you’ll have to leave the safety and comfort of your home and seek shelter elsewhere.
