If you are a beginner prepper, then you might find many things confusing. When reading on the internet, you will find out that experienced preppers use some particular words. You might think that preppers have a specific language that you can’t understand. To make it easier for you, we made a list of all the unfamiliar and strange words. Once you go through it, you will know the secret language of preppers. 

Prepping words and slang

  • 72-hour kit: A kit specially designed to provide necessary supplies for surviving for 72 hours.

  • Alpha strategy: Storing extra emergency supplies for exchange or donating.
  • Berkey: A water filtration system that can purify water from toxins. 
  • Bug out: To leave an unsafe territory and head to a safe one without potential dangers.
  • C-Ration: Combat ration
  • Carrington Event: A geomagnetic storm that brings a high amount of charged particles. This event can interfere with electronic devices and cause malfunction.
  • Collapse Event: Any event that can cause the end of the world.
  • Desiccant: Small package with a substance that retains moisture and is used to prolong the shelf life of foods.
  • Doomsday: The day when a major breakdown happens as a result of an emergency.
  • Doomsday Prepper: A person who prepares for an emergency event that can cause an end to the world we know today.
  • Doomstead: A safe place where you can shelter during an emergency.
  • Dutch Oven: A cooking pot that can be used over a fire. 
  • Every Day Carry (EDC): A few carefully selected items that fit in a small purse or pocket. The prepper carries these on an everyday basis. 
  • Faraday Cage: A shield that blocks electromagnetic fields and protects your electronics.
  • Food Grade Bucket: Plastic container that is safe for food storage. This airtight container will allow you to keep the food fresh for long. 
  • Fire Hydrant Wrench: A special wrench used to unlock a fire hydrant. Preppers consider fire hydrants as a source of fresh water for the whole neighborhood.
  • Freeze Dried Food: Food that has gone through low-temperature dehydration to remove moisture. This will keep the nutrients and elongate the shelf life.
  • Gamma Lid: A special lid that will turn your container into waterproof and airtight. It opens easily and is very convenient.
  • Genny, Genset: Both of them are a synonym for a generator. 
  • Ghee: A clarified butter that has the bad fats removed. This procedure ensures a longer shelf life.
  • Grid down: A situation when the electrical grid responsible for electricity supply, running water, toilets, and communication, doesn’t work and it would take for longer time to recover. 
  • Go Bag: A synonym for a 72-hour kit for evacuating to a safer area.
  • Golden Horde (GH): The looters and marauders that will try to steal during an emergency and head from the city to the rural areas. 
  • Head: Another word for a toilet.
  • Heirloom Seeds, Survival Seeds: Non-GMO seeds that are more than 50 years old. After harvesting, you can save the seeds for planting the next year.
  • Hydroponics: A method of growing plants without soil. They are planted in water fortified with soluble mineral nutrients. 
  • Junk Silver: 90% Silver coins whose bullion value doesn’t exceed the numismatic value. 
  • Kelly Kettle: A kettle used for boiling water in a very short time. It uses natural combustible materials and works like a chimney. You light some dry grass in the base, and the heat goes all the way up.
  • Larder: A cool and dry place in the home for storing foods. Preppers usually have a few larders in different locations in a case some of them are lost due to theft or natural disaster.
  • Looters: People that steal supplies from others in a case of emergency. 
  • Marauders: People that would harm to steal supplies from others in a case of emergency.
  • Martial Law: Direct military control in the case of a major disaster. Ordinary law is suspended, and the military government takes over. 
  • Mason Jar: A glass jar with an airtight lid for storing food.
The Preppers Language
  • Meal Ready To Eat(MRE): Food product that contains a particular chemical packet that will emit heat. Frequently used in the military, it allows you to eat warm food without using any heat source.
  • Mylar Bags: Aluminium bags for long-term food storage that contain a substance that removes moisture and oxygen. The bag protects from sunlight, so you can use it to store other supplies that can be damaged by the Sun. 
  • Mutual Aid Group (MAG): Local people that meet to discuss for emergency actions in their area. 
  • N95 mask: A mask that covers your nose and mouth used as a part of a strategy to protect you from infections. These can protect you in a case of fire or contagion. It isn’t suitable for toxins.

  • NINJA: An acronym for “no income, no jobs or assets.”
  • Oxygen Absorbers: Packages that draw out the oxygen from food containers and keep the food fresh.
  • NWO: The New World Order is a theory that refers to an emergency in the case of a totalitarian world government. 
  • Paraffin Wax: An edible wax that is used as a food preservative. 
  • Peak oil: A theory that claims that oil production will make its peak and start to decline.
  • Preps: Any type of stocked supplies that preppers store in the case of an emergency.

  • Retreat: A safe location in rural areas designed to shelter the preppers in a case of emergency.
  • Seed Bank: Stockpile of heirloom seeds.
  • Sheeple: People that follow authorities blindly and don’t prepare for emergencies. 
  • Solar cooker: A construction made of aluminum that traps heat and allows you to cook using sunlight.
  • Solar Flare: Storm on the Sun that sends radioactive particles to the Earth. This can obstruct the power grid and influence the economy. 
  • Troll: A person that posts online to provoke chaos. 
  • Zombies: People that didn’t prepare for an emergency. They are a direct threat to preppers, as they will try to steal their supplies. 
  • Zomby apocalypse: The chaos caused by aggressive looters.
